Life Enhancement

Whether it’s chess, Bridge, Wii bowling or Breathe and Stretch Hour, planned and scheduled activities are a hallmark of life at River’s Edge.

More and more research is demonstrating the beneficial effects of seniors remaining active and engaged, These benefits include the following:

  • improved overall physical functioning
  • restored and retained mental acuity
  • bettered balance and reduced falls
  • increased strength, endurance and flexibility
  • reduced pain from arthritis
  • lessening of symptoms of Parkinson’s, stroke and osteoporosis
  • lowered risk for colon, rectal and other cancers
  • reduced coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes
  • increased mood regulation and decreased distress from depression

The Life Enhancement Program at River’s Edge provides a multidiscipline approach to activities that can improve the quality of life of residents. An individualized plan is developed for all residents based on their own preferences.

They can select the activities they want to participate in from a Catalog, which presents offerings in color-coded “tracks.”

Those residents who want to contribute to Community Involvement as volunteers will find activities, designated in the Catalog in pink, ranging from calling bingo, to making gifts for the Veterans Hospital, to being part of the Resident Council.

Artist-Residents will find ample opportunity for Creative Expression in classes for ceramics, painting, water color and cooking. These activities appear in purple in the Catalog.

Balance, strength, mobility and flexibility all play a key role in wellness as we age. Being physically active helps improve overall well being. Fitness for Life classes include Yoga, chi kung and basic calisthenics and designated in red in the Catalog.

Attending church, practicing daily devotionals or meditating are among the many spirituals rituals that allow people to connect with something larger than themselves. Programs for Inspirations give residents opportunities to feed their spiritual selfs. These offerings appear in blue in the Catalog.

Knowledge Seekers who want to continue to work their brains to maintain or improve memory and concentration will find such activities as discussion groups, book clubs, beginning Spanish and “Cranium Crunches.” These programs are printed in green in the Catalog.

Meaningful and enjoyable opportunities to interact with other residents are offered through such Social Life programs as Coffee Bar, Movie Night and events outside the community, such as attending a play at the B Street Theater. The Social Life track appears in orange in the Catalog.

Activities that meet residents’ mental, physical, spiritual, creative, social and community involvement needs, along with increased companionship and socializing, are what quality of life is made of. The Life Enhancement Program at River’s Edge encourages residents to really LIVE every day of their life!
